Pinter's Style

                                 Comedies of Menace

First used by theatre critic Irving Wardle, the phrase "comedies of menace" evokes the contrasting nature of Pinter's plays: comedies that cause pain, comedy that at its heart, deals with themes of loneliness and menace.

                                 Memory Plays

Pinter's plays often deal with both the unreliability and power of memory. Pinter's characters often seem to have an unreliable recollection of their past, despite the fact that these pasts can come back to haunt them.

Pinter's style often consists of a series of images that rarely veer towards an argument. In Harold Pinter: Revised Edition, Hinchcliffe argues that these series of images reflect the influence of Pinter's dabblings in poetry. (39) This can be connected to the early popularity of verse drama in postwar British theatre.
